1988 ford bronco full size?

is a 1988 ford bronco full size a good vehicle for mud din i was planning on buying one for $1000.00 it is a 4x4 runs and drives fine auto but the motor on the transfer case to switch it into 4x4 needs to be replaced if i bought it was planing on chopping the back to make it look like a truck and then put a roll cage in it. but before i do all that i was wwonderingif anyone had any advice on this vehicle like personal experience. or opinion on weather it does good in the mud. it would really help me out.
