Stockings and garter belts. Are the reasons for wearing them the same in every case?

I have worn stockings and a garter belt since I was 14. I wear natural colour stockings with sheer tops, which are less conspicuous, and a garter belt of the standard type common in the 60’s. I ordinarily wear fairly short skirts and almost always a slip. My suspenders have very thin straps so in case they show they will be less noticeable. It’s not a big thing for me if show the top of my stockings when I cross my legs or get out of the car, but I'm not a teaser. I wonder if other women wear stockings under these same principles.
